‘You Should Be Afraid:’ Thread About How Amazingly Weird Trees Really Are Goes Viral

Trees are way cooler than you and I previously thought. They’re strong, silent, and mysterious—it just takes a bunch of experts throwing around tree facts to show you how awesome they are.

In a viral Tumblr thread, tree enthusiasts and botanists shared their wealth of knowledge about trees. As it turns out, they’re tough. How tough? So tough you wouldn’t want to mess with one or meet one in a dark alley. So tough that trees will probably outlast humanity. So tough that you should probably be afraid.

We at Bored Panda love trees. In fact, our office is in the middle of a park and we hug trees during our lunch breaks. So when you’re done with this post, think about reading our other articles about cool, awesome, and weird trees.

What we learn from the thread is that trees are really hardy and true survivors: they can adapt to almost any circumstances. They can grow practically anywhere. And even if they burst into flames and don’t survive, their ‘offspring’ will.

What’s more, you can graft parts of other trees onto one another and make weird hybrids like Frankenstein’s monster. Have you ever dreamed of owning a tree that grows lemons, limes, and oranges all at once? Well, your dream can become a terrifying and delicious reality now!

Grafting is simple, even if it sounds complex. Though there are numerous techniques, the essence of grafting is taking a section of a stem with leaf buds and inserting it into the stock of a tree. And, like we mentioned before, it doesn’t just have to be two plants—it can be three or more.

However, what we have to keep in mind is that grafting only works for plants from the same family. If you try grafting plants from different families, the graft won’t be successful. In other words, the more differences there are between plants, the lower the chance of success. Deciding when to graft plants together is important: April or early May are best when the buds of understock trees are starting to open until they blossom.
