Artist Paints Landscapes That Perfectly Blend Pixelation With Vague Abstraction

Jason Anderson, from Dorset in England, began his art career working on restoration projects like York Minster, Gloucester and Wells cathedrals as part of a stained glass apprenticeship. These famous old cathedrals boast some of the world’s most intricate and beautiful stained glass in the world, so it is no surprise that his paintings take some inspiration from their kaleidoscope of colors and shapes.

“I am fascinated by color and work with a strong palette to create deep impasto effects with the paint,” Jason writes on his website. “I relish the often frantic nature of mixing and arranging the paint in thick impressionistic daubs, and submitting to a process that creates its own detail and form.”

“This forces me to be bold and decisive; it also produces a kaleidoscope of shape and tone (reminiscent of stained-glass) which portrays the ever-present movement and energy found in nature.”

“This approach creates a painting which, like the landscape, is constantly changing. So when you move around the room and the ridges of paint catch the light, there is always something new to see.”

You can get a feel for the sun shining through Jason’s paintings, with many of them having a warm yellow focal point from which shadows and depth emerge. Jason lives by the sea and these landscapes also give a flavor of the sea; with the outlines of buildings and boats often reflected in pastel haze.
